Cleansing Oil or Foam? What’s the Difference

Cleansing Oil or Foam? What’s the Difference

We all know that an appropriate cleansing routine is essential for healthy and glowing skin.

But, when it comes to choosing cleansing products, there are so many available out there that it can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve gathered all the information you need to know about cleansing oil and foam so you can make a choice that best suits your skin type.

Oil Cleansers

Oil cleansers attract oil and dissolve it, so they are effective at removing oil-based impurities, such as sunscreen, make-up, sebum, and pollution without wiping out the natural oils on the skin's outermost layer. For this reason, they are suitable for sensitive and dry skin, as they don’t cause irritation, dryness, or inflammation.

This type of cleanser combines a variety of nourishing oils with plenty of vitamins that not only hydrate but also restore and boost the natural properties of your skin.

Some oil cleansers are also appropriate for oily and acne-prone skin as they help remove excess sebum, allowing a deep clean of clogged pores.

For this skin type, choose oils that don't overload your skin (non-comedogenic oils), such as jojoba, sunflower, grape seed, and rosehip.

How to Use an Oil Cleanser?

With clean and dry hands, massage several drops into your dry skin for a few minutes. Then, wet your hands and massage your face again to emulsify the oil. Use a washcloth or a cotton pad to remove the impurities.

Foam Cleansers

Foam cleansers are water-based cleansers that bubble like soap but are much gentler on your skin. Combined with water, they work into a lather and remove make-up residue, sweat, dirt, and water-soluble impurities that oil cleansers are unable to wipe out. These properties make them effective on oily, combination, and acne-prone skin.

There are many different types of foam cleansers designed to treat specific skin concerns. However, they may not be the most appropriate products for sensitive and dry skin, as they wash away natural oils and can dehydrate or irritate these types of skin.

How to Use a Foam Cleanser?

With clean hands, wet your face and apply a small amount of foam combined with water. Massage with your fingertips in a circular motion for about one minute. Rinse out with plenty of water.

Double Cleansing

There is also an alternative that doesn’t involve choosing one or another.

You can enjoy the benefits of both oil cleansers and foam cleansers by using the double cleansing method, which combines them for deeper cleansing, making sure you remove all kinds of impurities from your skin.

The first step is to use an oil-based cleanser to break down make-up, bacteria, and excess sebum. The next step is to apply a water-based cleanser with your face still wet to wipe out the impurities left.

If you wear cosmetics daily, such as heavy make-up and water-resistant sunscreen, this type of cleansing will be a perfect choice for your skincare routine.
